Judge of Appeal Chao Hick Tin
The Honourable Judge of Appeal Chao Hick Tin was President of the ALA from 2 December 2003 to 25 November 2006. He was elected President of the ALA at the 8th ALA General Assembly held in Singapore.
Justice Chao is one of the founding members of the ALA, and a member of the Working Committee established in February 1979 in Jakarta to draft the ALA Constitution. He received his legal education at University College, London and the Middle Temple, London.
Justice Chao served twenty years in the Attorney-Generalís Chambers from 1967 to 1987, playing a significant role during the negotiations on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea from 1974 to 1982. He was then elevated to the Supreme Court of Singapore, first as a Judicial Commissioner in 1987, then as a Judge in 1990. On August 2, 1999, he was appointed as a Judge of Appeal of the Supreme Court. During his tenure as a Judge of Appeal, he was elected President of the ALA. He was appointed the Attorney-General of Singapore on 11 April 2006, an appointment he held for 2 years. On 11 April 2008, he returned to the Supreme Court as a Judge of Appeal, and was appointed Vice-President of the Court of Appeal on 18 April 2008 by The Honourable the Chief Justice of Singapore.
Justice Chao retired as Judge of Appeal on 27 September 2017. He was appointed as a Senior Judge on 5 January 2018.
