ALA Governing Council Meeting (Penang, 1-3 August 2008)

The 29th Governing Council Meeting was held on 2nd August 2008 in Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort in Penang.  An unprecedented number of delegates attended the Meeting from member countries with 7 National Committees represented, namely, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Meeting agreed that the 10th General Assembly will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 16th to 19th October 2009.  The theme of the 10th General Assembly will be “Taking ASEAN to New Heights”, with workshops on the following sub-themes:

a. Improving on Enforcement of International Commercial Arbitral Awards in ASEAN countries
b. Resolving Present Legal Issues under the ASEAN Charter
c. Implications of the ASEAN Charter on Legal Education in ASEAN
d. Recent developments (2004 to 2009) in the Legal Systems of ALA member countries
e. Critical Evaluation of Investment Laws as a tool of Progress within ASEAN
f. Current Judicial Reforms in ASEAN Countries – Lessons and Experiences
g. IT and Taking ASEAN to Greater Heights.  

The Meeting further endorsed a proposal to establish an ALA Members’ Directory on the ALA Website. This project will be undertaken by the Singapore National Committee, which maintains the ALA Website.
