ALA 39th Governing Council Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam (25 March 2017)

The ASEAN Law Association convened its 39th Governing Council Meeting on 25 March 2017 in The Empire Hotel & Country Club, Brunei Darussalam.  The Meeting was attended by the representatives of the National Committees of all 10 ALA member countries.  The Meeting was chaired by the ALA President Hon. Atty. Avelino V. Cruz, who was assisted by the ALA Secretary-General Hon. Atty. Regina P Geraldez.

The Meeting began with an address by the ALA President, welcome remarks by Hon. Chief Justice Kifrawi Kifli as Chairman of ALA Brunei Darussalam which hosted the Meeting, and opening remarks by the other Heads of Delegation.  This was followed by the delivery of tributes to the Right Hon. Tun Arifin bin Zakaria who would retire as Chief Justice of Malaysia on 31 March 2017, and to the Hon. Justice Chao Hick Tin who would retire as a Judge of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Singapore on 27 September 2017.  The Governing Council unanimously adopted a resolution extending ALA’s immense gratitude and appreciation to them for their exemplary and invaluable contributions to ALA.
The ALA Secretary-General then presented her report on the activities of the ALA President and the ALA Secretary-General following the ALA 38th Governing Council Meeting, which included the submission of the reports required by the ASEAN Secretariat in accordance with the Guidelines on the Accreditation of Entities Associated with ASEAN.

Judicial Commissioner Aedit Abdullah (as he then was) proceeded to deliver the report of Mr. Jeffrey Chan, the ALA liaison with ASLOM and ALAWMM.  The approach, to work towards greater recognition and awareness of ALA’s potential and expertise in attaining the harmonization of laws in ASEAN, has borne fruit as awareness of ALA’s role in the community has been improved.  The Working Group on ALA at the Crossroads (represented by its Chairman, Justice Lee Seiu Kin), and the Working Group on Harmonization of Commercial Laws (represented by its Chairman, Atty. Llewellyn L. Llanillo) also presented their recommendations.  Upon ALA Brunei Darussalam’s motion, the Governing Council unanimously adopted a resolution that all ALA National Committees update the ASEAN Legal Systems E-Book.  It was also agreed that a Commemorative ALA Governing Council Meeting will be held in the last week of October 2017 in Manila, in conjunction with ASEAN’s 50th anniversary.

The ALA Singapore National Committee updated the Meeting on the preparations for the 13th ALA General Assembly, to be held in Singapore from 26 July to 28 July 2018, and presented a report on the ALA Website.  The Meeting concluded after the delivery of the reports of the 7 ALA Standing Committees.”
