11th General Assembly (Bali, 2012)
The 11th General Assembly of the ASEAN Law Association was held at The Westin Resort, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia from 15th to 18th February 2012, hosted by the Chairman of ALA Indonesia and then Chief Justice of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Harifin A. Tumpa. In attendance were Heads of Delegation and participants from 7 of the 9 ALA member countries, namely, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as 2 observers from Myanmar and 7 observers from the People’s Republic of China. The conference theme of the 11th GA was “Embracing the New Role of ALA after the ASEAN Charter”. The Opening Ceremony was officiated by the President of Indonesia, H.E. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who delivered a keynote speech which stressed on the importance of harmonisation of laws in ASEAN and proposing 3 issues for ALA to consider.
The incoming Hon. Chief Justice Hatta Ali of Indonesia was elected as ALA President and Mr Swandy Halim was elected as ALA Secretary-General. The 11th General Assembly also saw the unanimous endorsement of Myanmar as a full member of ALA at the next Governing Council Meeting in Singapore.
